Boarding Out a Bare Garage Wall

In a lot of San Antonio houses the garage is the one room nobody ever finished. The rooms inside got board, tape and paint, and the garage got bare studs and a slab. San Antonio Expert Drywall is who you call to close it in.

A garage you park in doesn't need the finish your living room has. We board it, tape the joints so two sheets read as one wall, and take it to a surface that paints well. For most people that's the right place to stop.

The other half of garage drywall in San Antonio is the garage that was boarded years ago and knocked about since. A car door catching the same spot. The corner behind the water heater nobody closed in. Neither needs the whole garage done over.

What an Unfinished Garage Wall Lets In

Bare studs leave your insulation and wiring open to the room, and the room open to whatever blows in under the door.

Dust and Heat in a Garage Nobody Boarded

Dust is the one people mention first. Fiberglass sheds, framing sheds, and nothing stands between any of it and your truck, your bikes or the boxes out there.

Heat is the second, and in San Antonio it's the one you feel. Board over insulation won't make your garage cool, and we won't tell you it will. It takes the edge off a wall that's been in the sun since noon.

What Changes Once the Garage Is Boarded

Light changes first. Bare framing and insulation swallow light, and a painted wall throws it back, so one fixture over your workbench does the work two were doing.

Then there's the door. Yours goes up several times a day and the whole street sees in. Closing the studs in is a shorter job than most people picture.

The Garage Walls We Look At Before We Give You a Price

Whether the studs are bare, part boarded, or boarded and never taped
What stands against the walls: a workbench, shelving, a water heater in its corner
Whether it is an attached garage or one standing on its own, since those differ
How the garage ceiling is framed, and what you keep above it
Where the damage sits, if a car door has caught one spot for years
Whether you park in there, or want a garage conversion to live in

The Garage Wall Your Car Door Has Been Catching

Nearly every boarded garage we walk into has one wall that has taken more than the rest. It is whichever one your car door swings toward, at about hip level, in a line.

Why the Garage Takes More Punishment Than Any Room Inside

Nothing in your living room gets hit by a moving vehicle. Garage walls get a car door, a hitch backing in and a mower shoved into the corner, in the same few places over and over. A spot caught fifty times has lost the paper on both faces, and once that paper is gone the board has no stiffness left. Filler over it comes straight back.

Putting One Garage Wall Right Without Redoing the Others

You don't have to reboard a garage to fix a garage. Where the rest of the walls are sound we cut back to solid board, let a piece in, tape it, and blend the finish out so your eye doesn't stop on it.

Garages make that easier than the house does. The finish is usually a light orange peel, a thin sprayed grain you mostly notice when a bulb is off to one side of it, and the paint is one flat color throughout.

What Decides Your Garage Drywall Price

Two garages the same size can price differently, and none of the reasons are mysterious. We measure yours and hand you the price before we go.

Turning a San Antonio Garage Into a Room

A garage conversion is the point where garage drywall stops being optional. Once that space is a bedroom or an office, the walls have to match the rest of your house.

What a Garage Conversion Asks of the Drywall

  • Walls that match the rooms inside. The finish in your hallway carries into the new room, so the doorway doesn't read as a seam.
  • A garage ceiling that is properly closed. The framing overhead gets boarded and finished the same as the walls, and it is the part a half-done conversion skips.
  • A real wall where the door was. Once the sectional door comes out, that opening gets framed, boarded and finished like any other outside wall.

The Garage Ceiling and the Water Heater Corner

The garage ceiling is the first thing to get left off. Working overhead is slower, so it is where a thin quote quietly drops a line, and it is worth checking on any quote you get.

The corner behind the water heater is the second one. One open corner isn't a finished garage, so we board behind and around it. If yours has to move first, that is a plumber's half hour.

What San Antonio Homeowners Ask Us About Garage Drywall

What would it cost to board out a whole garage in San Antonio?

A two-car garage, boarded, taped and finished ready for paint, usually lands between $1,100 and $3,400. Twenty feet square with eight-foot walls is 640 square feet of wall and 400 overhead, and surface is most of the spread. Finished to match the rooms inside your house, it runs past $4,000.

Is it worth putting drywall in a garage?

If you use the garage for anything besides parking, yes. Boarded walls cut the dust, take paint and put light back into the room. If the car just sleeps in there, bare studs aren't doing any harm, and you'll hear that too.

Does drywalling a garage add value?

It helps most at the point you sell. A finished garage photographs as a room, and an unfinished garage photographs as storage. We can't put a figure on the return, but we can give you the cost.

What kind of drywall goes on a garage wall?

That depends on your garage, and it is one of the first things we look at. A detached workshop, an attached garage with a water heater in the corner, and a garage conversion about to be a bedroom are three different jobs. We work it out standing in your garage.

Can you board out one garage wall instead of all four?

Yes, and we get asked it often. Where a car door has chewed one wall and the rest are sound, that wall is the job. We do check that the damage stops where you think, because a spot hit for years often has soft board past the mark.

My garage walls are boarded but the garage ceiling was never done. Can you finish it?

Yes, and it is the most common half-finished garage there is. Overhead work is what gets dropped, so we see plenty of garages with white walls and bare framing above. We board it, tape it and finish it out to match your walls.
