Why Does Height Change a Stone Oak Drywall Repair?

How Do We Reach a Drywall Crack Over Your Stairs?

The call we take most often up here is about a stairwell wall. Something went up the stairs and clipped it. A picture frame came off the hook. A hairline opened above the doorway at the top, and it's been there long enough now that you'd like it gone.

On a flat bedroom floor that's a short job off a stepladder. Over a staircase there's no flat floor to stand a ladder on, so most of the work happens before anyone touches the wall. Planks staged across the treads, ladder legs set to the rise, or a tower of scaffolding stood up in the entry and tied off. It gets built, worked from, then carried back out through your front door.

So the price on a stairwell wall has more to do with reach than with the size of the damage. We look at how the wall can be reached, work out what it takes to stand there safely, and give you the price in the room before anything comes off the truck. Plenty of them turn out to be reachable off a plank and two ladders, and when yours is, that's a shorter day and the price says so.

Which Marks Show Up on a Tall Entry Wall?

A tall entry is one unbroken run of drywall from the floor to the ceiling above the second floor, with nothing in the middle of it to break up what your eye does. Whatever happens on that wall, you see it from the front door every time you come home.

Most of what we see on them is one of these:

• A hairline running up out of the top corner of the front door frame, which is the weakest point in the sheet
• A faint straight line halfway up, where two sheets were joined and the seam has started to show through the paint
• A row of screw heads pushing out in a line across the wall
• An older patch that only shows in the afternoon, because its texture was never matched to what was around it

Walls do all of that all over Bexar County, and for the same reason on your street as on any street in town. What's different up here is where it sits: well above head height, on a wall a stepladder can't get square to.

Can We Match Knockdown Texture That High Up?

On a big wall the texture match matters more, not less. A patch on a short bedroom wall has a corner, a door casing and a piece of furniture near it, and all of that gives your eye somewhere else to go. A two-story wall gives it nothing at all. It's one open field of texture. Yours is probably orange peel, a fine grain sprayed on and then left alone. Or knockdown, which starts out the same and gets pressed flat afterward, so from the bottom of the stairs it reads as soft patches instead of grain. For part of every afternoon the light over the front door crosses that wall at a low angle and finds anything that doesn't match.

So the gun gets set on scrap, never on your wall. We adjust it and spray again, and again, until the spatter comes off the same size as what's already up there. Then the knockdown has to be flattened at the same point in drying as the wall around it was. Doing that up on staging, working over your head, is the part that wants a steady hand.

Then we look at the finished repair the way you actually will. From the bottom of the stairs, from the landing, and from just inside the front door late in the day. If it shows from one of those and not the others, it isn't done, and it goes back under the sander while we're still up there.
