Why We Cut Your Wall Back Before We Fill It

It looks backward, and it's the thing people ask about most. A doorknob strike crushes the paper and breaks the gypsum for an inch or so around it, and none of that will hold a screw. So the ragged edge comes off and what's left is a clean square with solid board on four sides. You lose a little more wall and you get a repair that stays put.

The Screw That Stops a Drywall Nail Pop Coming Back

Compound shrinks a little as it dries, so a patch gets built back in thin coats. Getting it level is the easy half. The other half is feathering, which means spreading that last coat thinner and thinner until your eye can't find where it ends. A hand-sized repair wants a blend about a foot across each way. Sanded back tight instead, it leaves a shallow saucer that shows when sun crosses your wall.

What About a Drywall Patch on a Corner or a Seam?
